Another no-holds barred discussion forum, where you prove that you're the most deadly Atonement ninja in the class.
Atonement is, at core, a novel about trying to fix something that’s irretrievably broken. By the time you finish the book, you realize that the whole story is, if not an outright lie, then a very heavily edited piece of Historical Metafiction, in which Briony tries desperately to re-write her life, and those of the people she’s hurt so terribly.

Your blogging mission is to consider the whole novel, but especially the last two sections (“Part Three” and “London 1999") and prove that, ultimately, Briony isn’t a despicable person. In the words of my learned colleague Cox: “Find something about her to like.” And then prove it.

As with the Hamlet blog, make your stand on the issue in an argument of about 500 words, cite textual references, and then make a detailed comment on at least one classmate’s posting, agreeing, disagreeing, or taking the discussion in a different direction. Making references to life, movies, other things you’ve read, etc. are fair game, as long as they’re relevant. (Again, comment right in your blog entry, don't worry about using the comment links beneath your classmates' entries.)

Finally, be sure to clearly place your NAME in the title of your Posting!

Don't be so Quick to Judge... Jacob Lee

Don’t be so Quick to Judge
Jacob Lee

Briony can be seen as a complete brat of a kid or seen as a humble high class woman who is very talented at writing. The question is what parts of the novel are just a simulation and which parts aren’t, this will help differentiate between her real and made up actions. This paper will assume part one is semi true and was the inspiration for her novel. Part two is also semi true as corporal Nettle and Brinoy have sent letters back and forth to gain information on Robbie during the war. Part three is completely made up and Briony tells that to the reader in part four: “it is only in this last version that my lovers end well, standing side by side on a South London pavement as I walk away” (pg 350). And the reason she made this part up will be explored later to show how she is a very caring woman. Part four, or “London, 1999” is the only part in which it is certain that the truth is being told.

In part one Briony has merely been one of the contributors to the problem, most see her as the main source of the problem but that just isn't true. The real culprits are the adults around her lying and going along with her story. When you see a child screaming in the supermarket you usually think that it’s the parent’s fault for having their child act in such a way, the same goes for the Tallis family. Briony’s parents go along with her plays and books and encourage her to be fanciful and think around the real and twist it into her own fantasy. Her family should be more realistic and consider all of the possibilities before making such a strong accusation. Paul Marshall and Lola are also to blame. They stood idle while an innocent man was sent to jail. They made have had an ulterior motive for doing what they have done but that doesn't change that what they did was wrong. All in all Briony was innocent; she was encouraged by her parents and set to blame by the reader who might have not seen her as the immature child she actually was.

In the last two parts Briony is a very caring woman and understands what she did wrong and decides to make a book where the couple “survive to love” (pg 350). Part three was all made up but for good reason. Briony writes this part in to give the reader a warm feeling and to give herself the opportunity to show the reader that she can fantasize and the end result will be a happy ending. Why should Briony be shamed for something she did as a child, especially since she’s trying to write her wrongs.
She should also be admired for her good morals. She refuses to change the names in her book in order to finally come out with the real truth and refuses to do it in order carry out her “atonement”. She also doesn't blame anyone else for her actions and in her old age she takes full responsibility for what shes done.

The only reason someone could despise Briony is because they’re too quick to judge. Take a look into her deeper character and realize how she recognizes what she did wrong and she uses her great talent to redeem herself to leave her family of friends fond memories of her and the tragic couple.

       Comment on Heather’s Blog
I really understood the connection she made between Hamlet and Briony. Her self-demotion to make her look like the bad guy, much like Hamlet did when he pretended to be insane. That leads to another thing to like about her, she never tried to cover up her mistake. She could easily have written herself out of the trouble she was in but didn't using another technique Heather talked about, writing. Heather talks about how she uses her strength in writing to right the wrong and it’s very admirable for her to do this instead of using what she’s good at for the wrong reasons.

  1. Briony is just a little kid, she didn't know better

When Briony made the accident of ruining Robbie's , Cecelia, and the rest of the family she was to young to understand the consequence. Briony was only 13 and she was only trying to protect her sister. Page 114 " And Cecelia, whom she ought to protect, she dare not go near" At the age of thirteen no child has the emotional, or mental state of mind to make big decisions. This is agreed by many moms with thirteen year old mothers http://www.circleofmoms.com/question/should-i-treat-my-13-year-old-adult-1700701 . This link shows how many mothers disagree with treating a thirteen year old as an adult. At the age of thirteen many kids believe they are old enough to make adult decisions, but lack the life experience and education to fully understand a situation. Briony was exactly at that point of her life where she thought of herself as an adult but lacked any mental cognitive skills or understanding skills to make an appropriate decision. To blame Briony with full hatred and disgust is blaming her as an adult. You would not blame a baby for pooing in their diapers, the same goes for Briony. You cannot blame her for not being old enough to understand the situation properly. If she was an adult then yes, she is to have full blame of her actions, but she is not an adult.

The real problem was that the whole family jumped right on Robbie and followed through with what Briony said. They should have known better then to let a fantasy filled child make a decision. To defend Briony more, Lola never told Briony that Robbie did not rape her. If Lola is as mature as she sais and thinks she is, she should have stepped up to the plate and told the truth. sacrificing someone else's life so that you can live happy is the most selfish and immature thing you can do. How can you expect a little girl to put the pieces together for you, then not tell the little girl that she is wrong. If Lola told the truth in the first place, Briony would have never told the police about Robbie. Lola could have at least said " it was not Robbie" but she remained silent. Then to remain silent after the false accusation sends someone to prison is even more dishonorable and selfish. Briony actually tried to fix the problem and admitted the truth.

  3. 2nd part continued

Briony as well felt deep guilt for what she did. She spent her whole life writing a book about the incident so that she could finally forgive herself. page 351 " Not quite, not yet. If I had the power to conjure them at my birthday celebration...Robbie and Cecilia, still alive, still in love, sitting side by side in the library, smiling at the trials of Arabella? It's not impossible. But now I must sleep" Briony is a good person because she tried to fix the problem in the only way she knew. If Briony was a bad person she would have just tried to get through life and forget about what happened, blame someone else. Briony never blamed anyone else, she punished herself by joining the nursery " But I get the impression she's taken on nursing as a sort of penance" Briony wanted to fix the problem or at least make it better. Briony tried her hardest even though it failed. As much as Briony is self filled and me, me, me she is able to admit her fault and look at what she does in a negative light. Just as Jacob said " she never tried to cover up her mistake" " she could have easily have written herself out of the trouble but didn't" If Briony was a bad person she would have forgotten about the incident a long time ago, and would have let time wash away the past. Pretended that nothing ever happened and believe she did not have any faults. Briony is an honourable person, she was just a stupid kid. If we always held the past against people when they were kids then everyone would never be forgiven. I believe it is time to forgive Briony of her past and let her die in peace. For the people who could have forgiven her died, so us as readers are the ones who have to give Briony forgiveness.
